Gods’ Man is a wordless novel by American artist Lynd Ward (1905-1985) first published in 1929. In 139 captionless woodblock prints it tells the Faustian story of an artist who signs away his soul for a magic paintbrush.Gods’ Man was the first American wordless novel, and is seen as a precursor of, and influence on, the development of the graphic novel. Each image moves the story forward by an interval Ward chooses to maintain story flow.
       This new edition of Gods’ Man features two essays by Ward and a new introduction by noted American wood engraver Barry Moser. Also included are reproductions of covers of other Ward books, other artwork, and photographs from the Ward Family, most never before published.
       This large, 8 × 12 reprint of the legendary novel without pictures is the first stand-alone, hardcover reprint of this book in nearly 70 years. With a dustjacket printed on Mohawk paper, full cloth binding, front board pastedown image, some nice touches with blindstamping, sewn binding, head and tail bands, and ribbon marker, the edition is limited to 300 signed and numbered copies.
